Historic Metuchen

Members of the Lennie Lenape of the Delaware Indians are seen as the original residents of the area now known as Metuchen. The first Europeans did not arrive until many years later, in 1665, but soon became interested in Metuchen, with space for trade, location and scenic landscape that made Metuchen ideal to settle, under the leadership of Lord Carteret. In order to promote development of the area and persuade buying land in Central New Jersey, Lord Carteret traveled to New England and promised generous land grants to those who relocated south to New Jersey, making land more affordable and encouraging land settlement and more appealing to build a home. Eventually, the area was settled around 1700, receiving its name from the Indian Chief, Metuching, who lived between 1630 and 1700. 

Metuchen Location and Transportation

Strategically situated within Middlesex County, this location make Metuchen a smart move with a simple commute to New York City. Metuchen is located less than two miles from a number of the state’s major arteries, which include the New Jersey Turnpike, the Garden State Parkway, Interstate 287, U.S. Highway 1 and State Highway 27, making Metuchen a strategic placement for all major highways in New Jersey.

The train station, less than two miles from any one of the homes in Metuchen, serves as a connection point for many local New Jersey Transit bus routes, making Metuchen the perfect placement for easy transportation. These routes provide a connection between Metuchen and Fords, Plainfield, Perth Amboy, Raritan, Piscataway, Edison and any number of locations with relative ease. In Metuchen, if one does not care to walk, convenient parking and other amenities are offered for those utilizing the train station as well. Also, just a mere 15 miles from Metuchen, air transportation is readily available to travelers through Newark International Airport, also easy reached through a direct train route, via New Jersey Transit. Allowing anyone to travel from their home in Metuchen to anywhere in the world, creating a new advantage to Metuchen.

Walking is another option for Metuchen residents. The creation of four pedestrian loop routes was made a reality through a prior grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, which make each route accessible from anywhere in Metuchen. Each route in Metuchen, beginning in a different section of the community, leads to the downtown area and nearby neighborhoods in this quaint town, making these pleasant walking routes easy to admire the surrounding area along the way. The trails range from 1.8 miles to 2.7 miles and are all marked with custom signs, directional arrows and mile markers that are easily accessible from any location in Metuchen.
